OBJECTIVELY, the room was stunning. Alyssa took it all in, marveling at the thoughtful decorating that combined Native American–and Southwest-style art and architecture with undeniably modern amenities. A woven rug covered the wooden floor as they walked in, and to the right a small kitchenette greeted them. Beyond that was a small breakfast area with gorgeous raw wood furniture. In the middle of the room, Alyssa saw a bed covered with a Navajo blanket.
A bed.A single bed.
One.
Past the bed, she saw a raised stone partition. And just past the partition was a sitting area, complete with a cozy couch, a wood-burning fireplace with a mantel clock over it, and a stack of piñon wood next to a door that stood open, revealing a rustic back patio.
On the left, opposite the bed, was a work area. A roomy desk and a comfortable chair. A flat-screen television was mounted on the wall above the desk, in the perfect position to be viewed from the bed.
All fabulously laid out and supremely decorated.
In fact, it lacked only one thing: another door.
It took a moment, but the import of that oversight finally keyed inside Alyssa’s addled brain.
There was no door to another bedroom. This was it. This was the entire suite.
One room.
One bed.
And the couch wasn’t even a fold-out. She could tell that much from here.
She turned around to face Chris, who still hadn’t answered the question she now repeated. “Where the heck is the bedroom?”
“Ah,” he said, looking as confused as she felt. “I think we may be standing in it.”
“Suite,” she said. “I thought you had a suite.”
“I did. I mean, I do.” He held up the key and the little paper envelope in which it had come. “It says so right here. Deluxe Junior Suite.”
The bellman stepped into the open doorway behind Chris. “Is everything okay?”
“No problems,” Chris said.
“Where’s the bedroom?” Alyssa said at exactly the same time.
The bellman looked from one to the other. “Let me guess. You won’t be wanting the bridal champagne and strawberries package.”
Alyssa ran her fingers through her hair and scowled. “It’s a great room. Honestly, one of the nicest I’ve ever seen. It’s just that we’re, um, not…you know.” She cleared her throat. “We expected a suite.”
The bellman looked at Chris, who shrugged. Then the bellman shrugged, as well, and Alyssa wondered if some sort of secret guy message had passed between the two of them. “The junior suite’s an open room with distinct areas. The full suite and the celebrity suites have separate rooms, but I promise you this is one of our most popular floor plans.”
He glanced hopefully at Alyssa, then frowned and cleared his throat. “Ah, it’s popular with most of our guests, anyway.”
Alyssa opened her mouth to ask about the possibility of moving them to another room. One with a bedroom. Emphasis on the room syllable. Then she shut it again. Because, hey, she’d invited herself along, and beggars couldn’t be choosers, right? And the couch looked pretty comfortable.
She was, however, exceptionally glad that she’d packed a sweatshirt to wear over her pajama top.
